It's worth remembering that there are a number of alternatives. The good news is that Google seems to be going towards open protocols.

There's also Gizmo (http://www.gizmoproject.com/) which claims to
interoperate with Skype and has an openness (and anti-Microsoft) agenda.
Same for http://www.jajah.com/en/index.asp. I haven't investigated all the
aspects.

Jeff Pulver's Free World Dialup (http://www.pulver.com/fwd/) is another
effort and it too offers interconnect with the PSTN.

And others ...

It's interesting to speculate about the market factors that can challenge
and limits Skype's behavior. I share the concern about being at the mercy
of Skype but want to feel that we have alternatives rather than depending
on their benevolence as nice as they might be.

Dave;

Can anyone on IP project what sort of US regulatory exposure this
will place upon Skype? I have my suspicions, but I would prefer the
opinions of those more immersed in the field.

Well... Based on eBay's stated "privacy" policy, this will open up pen tracing to LEOs with just a phone call at the least.

At the worst, Skype users will soon be getting new software that allows
LEOs to backdoor skype crypto and get free access to those phone calls
(also based on eBay's stated "privacy policy"...
